Because I wanted to buy grain in bulk, but didn't want to pay $100 or more for a pre-built grain mill, I decided to make my own. This is a DIY mill, and a cheap one at that, so does have its drawbacks (namely time to build). I got about 68% efficiency from this, whereas with my setup and commercially crushed grain I usually got 70%.

The surface of the roller glazed over with a brownish material after about 5 pounds of malt was run through it. Wire brushing the surface removed the glaze and restored it's ability to feed. Judging by the color of the dust from the milling and the pH of the mash, I don't think I got much, if any, concrete in the malt.
